Old German Shepherd "Sofie" (1year old)
Got seriously ill after the controversial tick and flea drug Bravecto
Seriously ill
My healthy Old German Shepherd (1 year old) has become seriously ill from BRAVECTO. Lip is paralyzed, ear and head are crooked, I carried her to a field to pee for 7 days. She was limp and sometimes stood disoriented. Seemed dizzy. Beeped every now and then, I think of confusion. I gave her a 3 months working BRAVECTO pill, at the same time as her 1 year vaccinations. I was so preoccupied with her stress at the vet that I didn't read up. And I probably didn't hear them say that it is better not to do this at the same time: pill & vaccination. It seems to have been said (…)
Reported at the manufacturer MSD
We are now two weeks further, and it has been officially reported to MSD, and to an umbrella organization that monitors medicinal (side) effects. The vet had a Bravecto representative come by, who also pays for the follow-up consultations. Now it is a bit better, it lasted 9 days and she is walking around a bit happier and now and then has a trot.
I give her 2x N-acetyl-L-Cysteine, liver supporting supplements every day. I read that tip somewhere from a homeopathic DA. She also only gets meat, previously I mixed that with chunks. And she gets painkillers, because it could also be an ear-jaw nerve that has become inflamed because of the dent in her immune system. (Don't quite understand this, but I'm just mentioning it.)
Poisonous pill has worn off
All in all I think and hope that our Sofie will be back to her old self when that terrible poison pill has worn off at the end of August. But what a grief that self-administered pill has already given me.
I would say: never do it, don't take the risk. Even though many dogs are doing well. If it hadn't been a strong, young, healthy big dog, mine wouldn't have survived this (the danger hasn't passed yet, but I'm deliberately not looking for more info).
