Veterinary microbiologist from Utrecht University: Dogs and cats do not play any role in the spread of the Corona virus
Both veterinarian Peter Klaver and veterinary microbiologist Els Broen (Utrecht University) confirm that the corona virus cannot be transmitted by dogs or cats. They simply cannot get the disease. For many animal lovers, this is a very reassuring fact ...
What about the corona virus and pets?Dogs and cats do not get this corona virus
Veterinarian Peter Klaver is very clear about it. "There is no evidence that pets like dogs and cats can get it," he said. Nor does Els Broens, veterinary microbiologist at Utrecht University and the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine, see any reason that your dog or cat can get it.
Human-animal-human
Okay, so your dog won't get sick from the virus. But can your dog transfer it? Imagine your neighbor has the corona virus and strokes your dog when you meet him during a walk. Can you get the virus through your dog again? "The chance is really zero, negligible," says vet Klaver.
Broens agrees. "It seems that pets such as dogs and cats cannot get the virus and play no role in its spread," she says.
Animals have their own virus
Each animal has its own corona virus. "There are many corona viruses worldwide," says Broens. The dog has its own, the cat, and the human. "Every animal has its own corona virus. In animals, their own corona virus also causes other complaints. This mainly concerns intestinal complaints." The corona viruses of animals do not pass on to other animals either. "The cat corona virus also only causes problems in cats and the dog corona virus only in dogs."
The corona virus that we now deal with as humans is probably from an animal. "We are not quite sure yet what that source was. But apparently there have been changes in the genetic material, which suddenly made it possible to make the jump from animal to human. But now this virus mainly spreads from human to human "says Broens.
Tips for owners
"The trick now is: don't touch your face and wash your hands well. You really disinfect. You don't get it from dogs, the greatest danger is humans. Stay away from places where other people are. Your dog or cats you can just cuddle endlessly. Walk a lot with your dog. Do not stop everywhere, just walk on. Your dog likes it very much and it is also good for your own resistance ", says Klaver.
