Owner Elisabeth Cetinkaya:
Bravecto did not kill my "Sarge" but it did change him and affect his quality of life.
This is my boy Sarge. I picked him up in Texas from a bad situation. He'd been through 3-4 homes in 2 months just kept getting passed around. He was around 5 years old when I got him. I never intended to keep Sarge I was going to find a rescue for him.
He did have a sensitive stomach before Bravecto which is why when my vet suggested it I asked about side effects. She told me it was completely safe and there were only minor side effects. She said was the best safest option available. Sarge had three doses of Bravecto.
Seizures, he was vomiting blood with bloody diarrhea
About a week after the third dose he started having seizures. Not the convulsion kind that I know about though. He would be walking around then just fall over and lay there. He was breathing and eyes open but not responsive. His legs tremble and shake alot. At first just the back ones but after he had to stay overnight at the vet because he was vomiting blood with bloody diarrhea and could hardly walk (which they could never find a cause for) his front legs tremble and shake too.
That was the start.
He was a pretty happy friendly boy before that. Now he is scared and nervous all the time. He is hyper aware all the time. He jumps up out of a sounds sleep snarling and growling. I have to keep him separate from people.
Before he was friendly with any dog or cat
He will try to attack anyone who comes near him that is not me. He does the same for dogs he does not know. Where before he was friendly with any dog or cat.
It was two years before the seizures stopped. The multiple vets I saw told me it was epilepsy but then refused to treat him or give him meds to manage it.
I am lucky I am in a situation where I can keep him separate from other people. Otherwise he would be put down. If I pass before him he will be put down.
His whole personality changed
His whole personality changed. He still has the stomach and bowel issues that I have to watch and manage so he doesn't end up back at the vet like before.
I am happy that he did not die like so many others. I love him and will care for him as long as I can. But it's a lot of stress. Taking him anywhere is not possible even going to the vet is a big deal I have to make sure they clear a path back to the room and keep everyone away.
