Post from owner Melody Faville (March 30, 2020)
This is Panda. Thursday I gave him Bravecto and Sentinal, per my vet's recommendation, because the ruff of fur around his neck is so thick a seresto collar does not work well to keep off fleas and ticks. The rest of thursday he seemed irritable and lethargic. Friday he seemed irritable, licking his lips and paws, pacing, not interacting with the family in quite the same way as usual.
Our other puppy started cowering submissively every time they were in the same space which is totally unusual for her. Friday evening my daughter and I were sitting on the couch together. She was reading a book. Panda was sitting by my feet.
Suddenly, he lunged and bit her in the face. She required 11 stitches and will likely need plastic surgery. Because of it being the weekend and because of covid-19, we have been unable to get ahold of either the authorities or our vet. Yesterday he still seemed off, with kind of aggressive body language and not normal interaction.
We have been keeping him outside except while my daughter rested to keep them 100% seperated. Yesterday evening he even growled at my husband, which is completely weird. This AM, he seems mostly back to his happy slightly anxious self. Unfortunately, we were told today that he will get a 10 day quarantine and then likely euthanized.
I feel so sad for our family, my daughter, and my buddy. I cannot say for sure that he didn't just coincidentally have some weird mental breakdown, but I believe this medicine caused psychosis. Unfortunately, it will cost him his life and my daughter(and all my children) will always bear the scars.
Before this happened, I had no idea these medications could even in theory cause issues like this. I am sharing in hopes that at least some good might come out of this, and other dog owners might choose a different treatment.
UPDATE FROM: Melody Faville, March 31, 2020 - I have been allowed to quarantine him here at home. Despite the initial response we got, euthanasia is no longer going to be required and plans are in place for additional help from a couple of rescue organizations.
